1) Armentara Meadows

Discover the enchantment of the Armentara meadows: in late spring and early summer these meadows are tinted with the vibrant colors of alpine flowers such as gentian, golden buttons and alpine pulsatilla. Surrounded by the imposing peaks of the Sasso delle Dieci and the Sasso di Santa Croce group, the view is breathtaking.

3) Störes

The third viewpoint that we suggest you in Alta Badia is Störes, a true wonder. To reach it, start from the parking of Armentarola and follow the path n.24 “Pralongià” through the wood. Once you have passed the trees, you will be greeted by a landscape characterized by typical huts.

Climbing up to the small cross at the top of the Piz de Störes, you can admire the Settsass, the Col di Lana and the splendid Marmolada. In winter this place becomes even more magical: an experience that fills the heart.

4) Gardenaccia

Gardenaccia is a plateau that offers a breathtaking view of the beautiful Val Badia.
It starts from La Villa and, if you wish, you can do the first part of the ascent thanks to the comfortable chairlift. The trail first skirts the Cordes via ferrata and then climbs through narrow hairpin bends. The end point is the Gardenaccia refuge, from the top of which there is a spectacular view of the whole of Alta Badia. Val Medesc

The first panoramic trail we recommend is the one that leads to Val Medesc. Starting from the hamlet of Rüdeferia, following paths n.15 and then n.12, you’ll cross an enchanting, sparse forest before reaching the beautiful basin of Val Medesc, at about 2,000 meters above sea level.

From here, inviting slopes lead you to the Forcella de Medesc, from where you can see the whole valley – an ideal route for those who want to enjoy the spectacular views of Alta Badia. It is a demanding route, but well worth the effort.

Sassongher

Mount Sassongher, which rises majestically to 2,665 meters inside the Puez-Odle Natural Park, is another fantastic viewpoint in the Dolomites. The hike to reach it starts from the Alta Via in Colfosco, passing by the Rifugio Edelweiss and continuing on to the Forcella del Sassongher, where an easy via ferrata leads to the top of this stunning conical formation. It can also be reached from the Rifugio Gardenacia, passing under the Para dai Giai.

From the top you can admire the Sassolungo, the Sella and even the Marmolada, the queen of the Dolomites.

Piz Boè

Have you ever climbed Piz Boè in Alta Badia? Located in the Sella Group at an impressive 3,152 meters, it is one of the most accessible peaks at this altitude, although the route to reach it is quite long. Garden Pass

The 2,121 meter high Passo Gardena is a true icon of the Dolomites, connecting Val Gardena with Val Badia. Located in the heart of the Sella Group and the Puez-Odle Natural Park, it offers breathtaking views of both valleys.

A renowned tourist destination, the Pass is crossed by the legendary Sellaronda trail and offers access to numerous hikes and via ferrata.

Valparola Pass

Straddling the regions of South Tyrol and Veneto, it is rich in history and offers an excellent panoramic view, especially of the Averau.

Before starting the Sellaronda MTB Track Tour, it is essential to have a good technical base. This tour requires stamina and riding skills on variable terrain.

Here are some tips to help you prepare:

Highlights of the Sellaronda MTB route

Starting from the upper Val Badia, the highlights of the Sellaronda MTB route are grouped as follows

1. Passo Campolongo:
After a thrilling descent in the Bike Beats Bike Park, you can choose between two options: descend over the less steep Campolongo Pass or take the chairlift to the opposite side and face a more technical descent to Arabba. The views of the surrounding mountains are simply incredible.

2. Porta Vescovo
The view is breathtaking: as soon as you get off the cable car, the Marmolada appears in all its beauty. From here you can choose between the enduro descents towards Arabba or a long mid-slope trail towards the Pordoi Pass.

3. Passo Pordoi:

The via ferrata Tridentina at Pisciadù is one of the most exciting experiences that the Dolomites have to offer. Via ferrata Piz da Lech: for experts

The Piz da Lech via ferrata is a short but intense route, recommended for those who already have a good climbing technique. Starting from the cable car station of Corvara, it winds along the eastern side of the Sella Group and reaches the summit of Piz da Lech at 2916 meters.

The route starts with a technical and vertical wall. An interesting passage is the ascent of the iron ladders that overcome a thirty-meter overhanging wall. With a development of 330 meters and an elevation gain of 400 meters.

At the end of the fixed rope route, a path leads to the summit in about 20 minutes, offering a spectacular view of the Dolomites. The descent follows a clearly visible ridge with a few sections of fixed rope route to the Piz Boe cable car. The whole route takes about 4 hours and is an exciting experience.

Ferrata Sas dla Crusc and Sas dles Diesc: two via ferrata routes for two levels of difficulty

The double via ferrata Sas dla Crusc and Sas dles Diesc start from the Rifugio Santa Croce and offer a unique and exciting experience. The first via ferrata, which leads to Forcella dla Crusc, is considered easy and suitable for less experienced climbers, with three short vertical stretches and several passages equipped for safety on exposed paths.

The route to Cima Dieci, on the other hand, is more demanding. It is very exposed and requires a good head for heights, with a steep and technical first half. The total duration of the route is about 7 1/2 hours and requires a good physical preparation due to the long stretches and the considerable height difference.

This combination of fixed rope routes offers an intense and rewarding adventure, allowing you to explore some of the most spectacular scenery in the Dolomites, with breathtaking views along the entire route.

Via ferrata Les Cordes: ideal for inexperienced climbers

The Les Cordes via ferrata, located in La Villa in the Val Badia, is ideal for those who want to start climbing via ferrata. With a duration of about 2 hours, this route is moderately difficult but also accessible to beginners.

Well equipped and safe, it winds through the breathtaking scenery of the Dolomites. Unlike other via ferrata that aim to reach a summit, this one leads to the Gardenaccia hut, ideal for a relaxing break.

With equipped walls that facilitate climbing and a variety of viewpoints, the Les Cordes Ferrata is ideal for those who want an exciting but safe introduction to the world of via ferrata.

Gran Cir and Piccolo Cir via ferrata: for beginners and novices

The Gran Cir via ferrata is ideal for beginners. Starting from Passo Gardena, between Val Gardena and Val Badia, this easy route takes about 2 1/2 hours and is ideal for those who are approaching this type of mountain adventure for the first time.

That of the Little Cir, on the other hand, is of medium difficulty. It also starts at Passo Gardena and follows a dirt road to the top station of the Dantercepies gondola. This route, which takes about 2 hours, is short but varied, with compact rock walls that provide excellent grip.

Both offer an unforgettable adventure, allowing hikers to enjoy spectacular views and a unique climbing experience.

Equipment to use for climbing a via ferrata in Alta Badia

Climbing via ferrata requires maximum safety, and to ensure this it is essential to use the right equipment. This includes some basic equipment.

• Climbing helmets. First of all, it is necessary to use a suitable helmet to protect the head from possible falling rocks, from blows in the narrowest passages or from the shocks received during a possible fall. The models currently available from Lagazoi are light, comfortable and ventilated: pleasant even on the hottest summer days.
• Harness. Provides a safe and comfortable anchor point for connecting the via ferrata kit.
• Carabiners. After the helmet, the most important specific equipment for climbing a via ferrata is a set of ropes and heat shields to which two carabiners are attached. Via ferrata carabiners allow easy attachment of cables and steps and are therefore stronger than traditional climbing carabiners.
• Dissipator. The purpose of this device is to reduce the fall factor. By absorbing the energy produced by a fall, the dissipator greatly reduces the impact on the body, minimizing the risk of injury that could prove fatal.

Clothing and shoes for a via ferrata in Alta Badia

In addition to the equipment, it is also very important to wear the right technical clothing to adapt to the climatic changes, preferring breathable and durable materials.
As already mentioned, the harness is essential for your protection; it must be well adjusted for maximum comfort and safety. Climbing gloves are also essential: they protect your hands from abrasions and improve your grip on cables and metal supports; they must be strong but at the same time allow good sensitivity. These cannot be rented for hygienic reasons, but are available for sale in our shop.

Another essential piece of clothing is footwear. When choosing via ferrata shoes, it is important to find ones that offer safety and comfort. A good sole will give you the right grip on different terrains, while the upper should be sturdy to protect your feet from impact, but also flexible to allow for easy movement. The toe box, also known as the climbing zone, should be flattened to provide good grip and sensitivity.

For more stability and protection, we recommend hiking boots (e.g. La Sportiva Aequilibrium) that provide excellent ankle support. If you are looking for more lightness and freedom of movement, you could opt for an approach shoes (e.g. La Sportiva TX4 Evo). On the other hand, if you are looking for a compromise between the two, mid boots are for you, offering a good balance between stability and mobility (e.g. Scarpa Mescalito mid).

What to put in your backpack before approaching a via ferrata

To approach a via ferrata with the proper equipment, start by choosing a climbing backpack. Compared to a general outdoor backpack, this type of pack allows you to keep your weight closer to your body, which improves your balance. In addition, its narrow and tall shape allows you to move more freely in tight spaces. The backpack also offers the possibility of attaching a climbing helmet. Inside, you will find international emergency numbers and instructions on how to notify mountain rescue.

Here’s what you never want to be without:

• A waterproof jacket / mid-layer / vest for temperature changes;
• A spare technical T-shirt;
• Sunglasses;
• A first aid kit for minor accidents;
• A hiking water bottle;
• Multi-function pocket knife;
• A headlamp (if you plan to hike at night).

Finally, we recommend that you use nylon bags to collect waste and keep the environment clean.

How to take part in the Dolomites Marathon

Unlike other local events, the Dolomites Marathon is a closed event with a maximum of 8,000 participants. Of these, 4,300 are selected through a lottery that can be accessed through the official event website. The other 3,700 places are reserved for those with vested rights (participants in previous editions), those registered through official tour operators, special guests, and those who opt for a premium registration, the surplus of which is earmarked for charitable purposes, underscoring the Marathon’s commitment to making a difference not only in the world of cycling, but also in society.

Information about the route of the Marathon of the Dolomites 2024

Once again this year, the event will feature three different routes of varying length and difficulty:

• Marathon route: 138 km with a difference in altitude of 4230 meters;
• Medium route: 106 km with a difference in altitude of 3130 meters;
• Sellaronda route: 55 km with a difference in altitude of 1780 meters.

Each route crosses some of the most famous passes in the Dolomites, such as Passo Pordoi, Passo Sella, Passo Gardena and Passo Campolongo. The combination of long climbs and technical descents makes the Maratona dles Dolomites a true test of strength and endurance.

Long route or marathon route

This is the most demanding route of the Maratona dles Dolomites, with an impressive length of 138 km and a difference in altitude of 4230 meters. The “Marathon route” starts in La Villa and takes cyclists towards Corvara, crossing the Campolongo Pass before descending towards Arabba.

It continues with a series of passes – Pordoi, Sella and Gardena – that lead back to Corvara and to the Campolongo Pass. After the descent to Pieve di Livinallongo, there is a flatter stretch that offers a brief respite before the 9.9-kilometer climb with an average gradient of 9.3 percent to the Giau Pass. Once over the pass, riders descend to Pocol and face another tough climb to the Valparola Pass.

The finish line is approached with a descent into Val Badia and the final challenge: a short but steep climb up to Mür dl Giat, which leads to the finish line in Corvara.

Medium route

A little less challenging, but the numbers speak for themselves: 106 km and 3130 meters of elevation gain. It mainly follows the long route described above, but avoids the ascent of Passo Giau by detouring to Passo Falzarego and Valparola.

Short Route

Detailed program of the Marathon of the Dolomites 2024

The start is scheduled for 6:30 a.m., but we advise you to arrive early to avoid being in the last starting group. The event will be broadcast live on RAI 2 from just before 6:30 a.m. until noon, allowing cycling fans to follow the exciting stages of the race from the comfort of their homes.

The first passage of the riders through Corvara is scheduled for 8:30 a.m., while at 10:00 a.m. the Fanzone Mür dl Giat (with food, drinks and entertainment) will begin in La Villa. This will be an opportunity for friends, family and fans to cheer on the athletes before the tough climb, which has a gradient of up to 19%.

The first riders of the medium route will cross the finish line in Corvara at 10:00 a.m., followed an hour later, at 11:00 a.m., by the riders of the marathon route. Right here in Corvara the Rana Pasta Party will take place, a convivial moment to celebrate the efforts of the race.

Finally, at 15:30, at the end of the event, the official award ceremony for the first in each category and for the various trophies will take place at the local ice rink, accompanied by musical entertainment.

We only mention some of the easiest ones, perfect also for beginners: the lake trail, the Ladin farms trail (Masi Ladini), or the path through the naturally snow-covered meadows of Armentarola.

Fun for everyone with tobogganing

How about a toboggan ride? It’s an activity that always brings fun moments for the whole family. There are two tracks in Alta Badia:

• Tru liösa Foram track starting from the Piz Sorega plateau and finishing in San Cassiano. The start is accessible by the namesake cable car. The 3 km descent is easy and suitable for all ages.
• Rit – Biei Trail: reachable on foot in about an hour from the center of La Val by following trail number 6 towards Lake Rit. This route, 1.8 km long, is also quite easy and suitable for families.

Cross-country skiing among sports and enchanted landscapes

If you’ve always wanted to try cross-country skiing, the Armentarola center offers 26 km of trails immersed in a fairy-tale landscape. There are 8 different difficulty levels, from complete beginners to more experienced skiers, to do sports while admiring all the beauty of the surrounding landscape.

Love pirouetting on ice? The Corvara Ice Rink is the perfect place to spend carefree and cheerful moments, whether as a couple, with friends, or family. During the winter months, the enchanting Sompunt Lake transforms into a natural ice rink, offering a unique experience in a fairy-tale winter landscape. Here, surrounded by breathtaking nature, you can enjoy ice skating or curling, available both during the day and in the evening.

Indoor climbing gym for vertical challenges in tota safety

If you’re a climbing enthusiast, you can pursue your passion even in winter thanks to the two state-of-the-art facilities in Alta Badia: the San Cassiano indoor climbing and bouldering gym, and the Corvara Boulder Center, where you can test your skills and have fun in total safety on walls of different difficulties, not forgetting to equip yourself with the right indoor climbing gear.
